With my 5 year studio birthday coming up, I thought I would write a wee story.
I decided to go out on my own and try to create a sustainable hair salon, somewhere safe for my clients and myself. Coming from a salon that didn’t recycle or care for the environment made me want to do it even more.
I created Studio A114 to be a safe place. We use Italian hair care brand Davines and I am proud to be a concept salon for them here in Northern Ireland. In the studio we use Paper not foil, have added ECO heads to our basins and it is a completely vegan space. Both Joe and I use Leaf scissors as they plant trees for every purchase and are ethically made.
We use all fair trade tea bags that are compostable and pride ourselves on sourcing local when applicable. In March 2020 we became the first salon in Northern Ireland to become part of the green salon collective. Everything from your hair to colour is recycled. Hair is put into hair booms that go into our oceans to help soak up oil spills and protect our oceans.
I pride myself on being a cruelty free and gender neutral studio. I charge for the haircut not gender. So if you have short hair you pay for short hair, if you have long hair you pay for long hair. Everyone is welcome in Studio A114.
Last year I expanded and got a business partner Joe Mcgivern. I used to work with Joe years ago and manifested him into my studio life. Joe has adopted the studios way of thinking when it comes to hairdressing. We serve one client at a time and have created a beautiful space full of natural light and plants everywhere.
Within the studio we support local artists and stock and sell their pieces. It is important that everything within the studio is ethically sourced and does not affect the world we live in.
I am looking forward to seeing how the space grows.
